🌿 Happy Earth Day! 🌿 This planet that we live on has magic within her that allows room for so much hope, discovery, and rebirth. They may not always take the form you'd expect, but that doesn't make it any less meaningful. Here's a poem I recently discovered that I'm finding especially relevant and comforting today. I hope you may find some solace in it, too. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They shut the road through the woods
Seventy years ago.
Weather and rain have undone it again,
And now you would never know
There was once a road through the woods
Before they planted the trees.
It is underneath the coppice and heath,
And the thin anemones.
Only the keeper sees
That, where the ring-dove broods,
And the badgers roll at ease,
There was once a road through the woods.

Step 1. Sketch out an idea, which is sometimes super rough and sometimes a bit more refined.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Step 2. Make the illustration magic happen! This is usually a roller-coaster ride of 'Yes, I love it, I am amazing' and 'Argghh this looks terrible, what am I doing.' Push through the ugly stages and the self-doubt with lots of pep talks, coffee/tea breaks, and probably a few mistakes that you can fix later. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Step 3. If it's a painting, scan it in and digitally correct any mistakes or wonky colors. If it's digital, yay, you can skip that part. Prepare the file for printing and send it to press! I personally print all of our paper goods, so this means I spend a full day at a local printshop running the presses and checking quality as prints come out. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Step 4. Trim out the cards with a crazy-cool industrial paper cutter at another local shop, and then insert and score them ONE-BY-ONE with an electric scorer. This takes a few hours. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Step 5 & 6. Back at the studio! Inspect, fold, and stuff each card with an envelope. Enjoy the satisfying sound of paper brushing against paper.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Step 7. Package in a clear, cello sleeve to protect from dust, moisture, and greasy fingerprints. (And kitty paws.)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Step 8. Admire the handiwork! And then spend hours photographing, editing the photographs, and listing the new product online for stores and customers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Step 9. Wait and hope with bated breath someone else enjoys the product you just made. Then feel a rush of joy and do a little dance when the first order rolls in!
